What is Play Theory? Play (verb) is an activity undertaken for pleasure or leisure not for a practical or serious purpose.
Play Theory was pioneered by H.S. Curtis, Mitchell & Mason, Rousseau and G. Stanley Hall. Lev Vygotskian. Jacques Le Coq and Gaultier have revolutionised how students play in a dramatic context working with the physical body, imagination, traversing the mind and finding the game, le jeu.
Modern day Play Theory sheds; preconceived notions and assumptions of what art is, self perceptions of 'artistic ability' and the how drama / culture is valued.
Play Theory provides a wonderful platform for an immersive, fun detailed exploration of the foundations of storytelling. Coupled with hybrid art techniques the theory and its practical application provides all the aforementioned with literacy, creative critical thinking, rich language oral skills and communal connection.

For The Arts Unit
The Multicultural Playwrights Course 2014 and 2015. This program supports refugee students and students from a non-English speaking background in Years 7-11 from NSW Public Schools. Students share their life stories whilst building self-esteem, social interaction and skills in Literacy and Drama. During the 2015 program students participated in six workshops where they were involved in a series of activities to develop their English Literacy, expression and performance skills. Additionally we bought the SOH for an workshop for Reverse Storytelling. Combining Oral Language, Play, Sculpture and Video. We went to a local community car wreckers yard and created a story from looking at live wrecked automobiles. Built scenes and then made a simple stop motion of the story.
